Tatul Sonentz - ROME

Windblown
as sheaves of leaves
frazzled pages of history
soar in time scattered
to the four winds…

From the global
scepters of Caesars
to the inverted cross
of the twice petrified
fisherman-apostle Simon
from Nero to Constantine
to the Borgias and the Duce –
the boastful despot
of a short-lived embryo
of an empire rising
to final fame hoisted
upside down alongside
the corpse of his lust –
rolls the broken chariot
of imperial history
now on rubber wheels
of Fiats and Vespas
moving in rhythm
with the green-yellow-Red
lights on sculpted corners
of overcrowded
crossings.
