Ahmad Shamlu - SOUVENIR

For the cricket
the entire night was a chain
to sunrise

Shivering in pain
caused by the breach on our lives
dawn awakened
all at once

The forest
plucking from dreams the puzzled eyelashes of its death
opened wide the frenzied eyelid of its foliage
and the chainsaw of Ozgol *
cut in deep - crimson - with a cry
In the restless grass of the valley

Until
with broken heart
we had taken our leave
from the jaundiced summer

Ahmad Shamlu
translated by Tatul Sonentz
from the French translation of Sylvie M. Miller

* Ozgol is a small village, north of Tehran
