Night comes to Venice
Like a masked lover
In a black cape
As daylight
Like a lingering suitor
Departs sailing to the east
Lowering its colors
In defeat…
In her damask-draped boudoir
Her Most Serene Majesty
Of the grain-spice- silk-
Bearing sea trades
The sun at a profit
For candlelight…
And retires
With the night.
